| Family told by NHS: Alzheimer's is not a 'health condition' NHS Worcestershire ruled that Judith Roe, 74, did not qualify for NHS funding because her condition was a "social" rather than "health" problem, even though she was so ill she could not make a cup of tea and regularly left the stove on. She was forced to sell her £200,000 home to pay her £600-a-week nursing home fees, which would have been funded if she had been categorised correctly. Mrs Roe's family appealed to the Health Service Ombudsman, which ruled that Mrs Roe's assessment had been incorrect and her treatment should have been funded by the NHS. NHS Worcestershire has now reimbursed them for six years of care. Today is Memorial Day....not just a bonus day out of the office but a day to reflect on those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We can never repay them, never thank them, never undo what they have done. All we can do now is remember them and pray for the loved ones they left behind. | | |
| You served your country well. Enjoy it on the other side!

| ABC Radio Networks Statement on the Passing of Paul Harvey- Saturday February 28, 2009, 8:34 pm EST
DALLAS, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Jim Robinson, President of ABC Radio Networks, on the passing of Paul Harvey: Paul Harvey was one of the most gifted and beloved broadcasters in our nation's history. As he delivered the news each day with his own unique style and commentary, his voice became a trusted friend in American households. His career in radio spanned more than seven decades, during which time countless millions of listeners were both informed and entertained by his "News & Comment" and "Rest of the Story" features. Even after the passing of his loving wife Angel in May 2008, Paul would not slip quietly into retirement as he continued to take the microphone and reach out to his audience. We will miss our dear friend tremendously and are grateful for the many years we were so fortunate to have known him. Our thoughts and prayers are now with his son Paul Jr. and the rest of the Harvey family. Jim Robinson President, ABC Radio Networks | | |
| If the Big 3 auto makers get a federal bailout I will never buy one of their cars again. Never. Not once. The way business works in a free market economy goes something like this: A business produces products or services which it sells for more than it costs for the business to produce. In this way the employees of the business get paid for their work, the stakeholders in the business get a return on their investment, and the purchaser of the goods or service benefit from the product or service they purchase. In order for your business to succeed and stay afloat you have to be able to sell whatever widgets you make for more than it costs to make them. If you can't sell your widgets for more than it costs to produce them, you can't afford to pay your employees and your investors lose money. If this continues for some time you will probably have to shut down your business, lay off your employees, and liquidate your assets. There are things you can do along the way to avoid this situation. You can trim down your costs to become more efficient and turn a profit. You can file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protections to give you time to reorganize and reemerge from bankruptcy as a profitable company. What you can't do, in a free market economy, is go to the taxpayer and demand money to keep a failed business in an unsustainable business model afloat. You can not make taxpayers across the country shoulder the burden of your bad business decisions just because you produced widgets they didn't want at a cost greater than you could sell them for. In this case the widgets are cars that Ford, GM, and Chrysler are producing at a far greater cost than they can sell them for. They got themselves into this situation and they can get themselves out of it by paying their employees less, cutting back benefits, cutting back operational costs, or shutting the doors. But you and I, people who already are up to our eyeballs in tax liabilities we can never pay, should not have to go spending money we don't have to "bail out" businesses that don't know how to put together a sustainable business model. Why should you pay for the retirement benefits of some dude who spent 20 years on an assembly line putting hubcaps on cars as they rolled down the line? Why should you pay the salaries of the union leaders who shoved those contracts and benefits down the throats of auto industry executives for decades? Why should you pay for the lucrative salaries of auto executives who didn't have the cajones to say NO to the unions and actually develop a sustainable business model? Why should you pay for all that? Why should I? The US House of Representatives just passed a bailout bill which the Senate will likely pass as well and the President (the current one or the next) will certainly sign. I urge you to call your congressional representatives (House and Senate) and make them aware of your strong opposition to this gross misuse of taxpayer dollars. I for one am telling my congressional delegation that if they vote for the bailout I'll never vote for them again and if it passes I'll never buy a Big 3 vehicle again. | | |
